Quantifying the Performance of Optoelectronic Fpga's: the Impact of Optical Interconnect Latency
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this chapter, we address the performance advantage of using optoelectronic areaI/O to realize three-dimensional multi-FPGA architectures. The performance of such architectures strongly depends on the latency of the optoelectronic components used. Determining the optical link latency that is required to benefit from the promised advantage is far from trivial. We present first estimates of the impact of optical interconnect latency on system performance, for a particular class of OE multiFPGA architectures. Our approach is based on experimental determination of achievable clock rates when realizing synchronous designs. Our experiments indicate that with latencies of state of the art optical links the gains can be positive. 1 University of Gent, dept. of Electronics and Information Systems, BELGIUM 2 Flanders Language Valley, BELGIUM Interconnects in VLSI Design 2

Quantifying the impact of optical interconnect latency on the performance of optoelectronic FPGAs
In this paper, we address the possible advantages of using optoelectronic area-I/O to realize three-dimensional multiFPGA architectures. Our approach is based on experimental determination of achievable clock rates when realizing synchronous designs. Our experiments indicate that three-dimensional optoelectronic multi-FPGA architectures exhibit higher performance than traditional two-dimensiona...
متن کاملExtraction and Modeling of the Optoelectronic Characteristics of an Optical Interconnect Link by Direct Measurement of its Electrical Performance
Direct measurements of optical characteristics of a deployed optical interconnect is difficult. We present here a technique that enables the extraction and modeling of some of the channel's optoelectronic characteristics by direct measurement of its end-to-end electrical performance. This technique can greatly facilitate the optimization of optical link transceivers by providing a realistic mod...
متن کاملReconfigurable and adaptive photonic networks for high-performance computing systems.
As feature sizes decrease to the submicrometer regime and clock rates increase to the multigigahertz range, the limited bandwidth at higher bit rates and longer communication distances in electrical interconnects will create a major bandwidth imbalance in future high-performance computing (HPC) systems. We explore the application of an optoelectronic interconnect for the design of flexible, hig...
متن کاملA High-Performance Optoelectronic Interconnect Router: Using Increased Bandwidth to Enable Latency Reduction
Continuing strides in processor performance impose the need for aggressive latency hiding/reduction techniques in order to fully exploit improved capabilities at the system level. These techniques demand increased interconnection bandwidth which, ultimately, can surpass that which can be supplied by current technology. This paper addresses this problem by presenting the design and implementatio...
متن کاملOptical Pump-Probe Latency Measurements of Silicon CMOS Optical Interconnects
We present the first measurements of O/E/O conversion latency in a hybridly-integrated optoelectronic/CMOS chip designed for chip-to-chip optical interconnection. Using an optical pump-probe technique, we perform precise measurements with picosecond resolution that closely match our simulations. Optical interconnects have the ability to alleviate the looming CMOS interconnect bottleneck by prov...
